However, some demerits of expanding tourism gradually come to the surface with the most prominent being environmental degradation. When large numbers of tourists flock to a particular area, the natural environment often bears the brunt of their presence. To put it more precisely, popular coastal destinations may experience increased pollution due to the accumulation of waste from tourist activities. Similarly, in mountainous regions, excessive foot traffic can lead to soil erosion and the destruction of fragile ecosystems.
